Hussain Ahmed, a 32-year-old resident of Cachar district in Assam, India, said that he was on an IndiGo flight from Mumbai to Silchar via Kolkata last Thursday. He suffered a ‘panic attack’ mid-air. After the plane landed, the cabin crew was helping him off the plane. At that time, a passenger named Hafizul Rahman suddenly slapped him.

Hafizul Rahman was detained after the flight landed at Kolkata airport in West Bengal. The plane’s security personnel handed him over to the police. However, he was later released. Hussain Ahmed said, ‘I boarded the plane at 2 am last night. I was very scared then, my body was shaking. So I sat next to a passenger. When I asked his name, he said, Hafizul Rahman. I understood that he was a Muslim. So I greeted him. I was still nervous. Seeing that, he lost control and slapped me three-four times.’

Hussain also said that he did not misbehave with the passenger.

This resident of Assam further said, ‘The cabin crew intervened after seeing the incident and asked why he slapped me. They gave me water and tried to calm me down.’

After landing at Kolkata airport, Hussain Majumdar and the accused Hafizul were taken to the police station for questioning. Hussain said that he was later taken from the police station to the hospital, so he could not board the flight to Silchar.

Hussain also said, “My head hurts because of the slap and I can’t get up easily.”

After this unexpected incident, Hussain’s family filed a general diary (GD) with the police station last Friday regarding his disappearance. Then, last Saturday, he was found at a railway station in Assam’s Barpeta district. The distance from that station is about 400 kilometers.
